A Novel Preconditioning Technique and Comparison of Three Formulations for Hybrid FEM/MoM Methods

چکیده
Hybrid FEM/MoM methods combine the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moments (MoM) to model inhomogeneous unbounded problems. These two methods are coupled by enforcing field continuity on the boundary that separates the FEM and MoM regions. There are three ways of formulating hybrid FEM/MoM methods: outward-looking formulations, inward-looking formulations and combined formulations. In this paper, the three formulations are compared in terms of computerresource requirements and stability for four sample problem geometries. A novel preconditioning technique is developed for the outward-looking formulation. This technique greatly improves the convergence rate of iterative solvers for the types of problems investigated in this study.

Development and Application of a Fast Multipole Method in a Hybrid FEM/MoM Field Solver
Hybrid FEM/MoM methods combine the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moments (MoM) to model inhomogeneous unbounded problems. These two methods are coupled by enforcing the continuity of tangential fields on the boundary that separates the FEM and MoM regions. When modeling complex geometries with many elements on the boundary, the MoM part of the problem is the bottleneck of the hy...

Hybrid FEM/MoM methods combine the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moments (MoM) to model inhomogeneous unbounded problems. These two methods are coupled by enforcing field continuity on the boundary that separates the FEM and MoM regions. Hierarchical higher-order tangential vector finite elements (TVFE’s) are of practical interest because they can be easily combined with low-ord...
متن کاملAnalysis of Electromagnetic Scatterers using Hybrid Higher Order FEM - MoM Technique
A higher order large-domain hybrid finite element – method of moments (FEM-MoM) technique is presented. The discretization and solving FEM and MoM parts of the problem and the coupling of the two methods is described. A benchmark example of analysis of a scatterer with pronounced curvature at resonant frequency is given, demonstrating accuracy and robustness of the presented hybrid technique.
متن کاملTechniques for Optimizing FEM/MoM Codes
This paper presents techniques for optimizing the performance of FEM/MoM codes. The process of computing MoM matrices can be accelerated by choosing the order of Gaussian Quadrature calculations adaptively and taking advantage of the symmetric nature of the impedance (or admittance) matrix. Optimizing loop index order and buffering loop indices can significantly improve the performance of matri...
متن کاملEffective Preconditioners for the Solution of Hybrid FEM/MoM Matrix Equations using Combined Formulations
Hybrid FEM/MoM modeling codes generate large systems of equations that are generally solved using inward-looking, outward-looking or combined formulations. For many types of problems, the combined formulation is preferred because it does not require a direct inversion of the coefficient matrices and can be solved using iterative solution techniques. An effective preconditioner is a crucial part...
